The Stranger Child

The famous legend The Stranger Child was written by Count Franz Pocci. In the story the author projects the plight of a laborer who used to earn his daily bread by cutting wood. His wife and children also used to help him in his work. He had a son and a daughter his son’s name was Valentine, and the girl's, Marie. They were very obedient child and their parents use to love them a lot. Later in the story The Stranger Child the author narrates one incident of a winter evening when the entire family was having their supper and the father was loudly reading the Bible.

Just as they sat down they heard a knock on the window, and a sweet voice that called "O let me in! I am a little child, and I have nothing to eat, and no place to sleep in. I am so cold and hungry! Please, good people let me in!" hearing the voice both son and daughter ran towards the door to open it.

They opened the door and found a Stranger Child waiting out. As they opened the door The Stranger Child entered, and going to the fire began to warm his cold hands. The children shared their bread and bed with the child. The Stranger Child felt very happy and blessed Valentine and Marie. They all fell asleep. Suddenly in the night Marie heard a singing tone and touching her brother whispered softly "Valentine, Valentine, wake up! Wake up! Listen to the beautiful music at the window." Valentine woke up and heard the most wonderful notes and the sweet song. The children looked out of the window and saw a rosy light in the east and several children dressed in sparkling, silver robes holding golden harps and lutes in their hands.

Suddenly they heard another voice at their back it was The Stranger Child clad in a golden garment and speaking to the children as “I am the Christ Child, who wanders about the world seeking to bring joy and good things to loving children. Because you have lodged me this night I will leave with you my blessing." the children were gifted with a Christmas fir tree that bore the same wonderful fruit to the children year after year.
