Once upon a time there was a beautiful garden. Studded with lovely flowers and plush green trees it was a favorite playground for the children. However the owner of the garden was the Selfish Giant. The children had heard of the Selfish Giant, but they managed to come and play in the garden, every day. The Selfish Giant did not like the warm sound of the chirpy children. He wanted to enjoy the natural beauty of the garden all by himself. He tried to catch the naughty children at play but failed every day to nab them.

Soon the Selfish Giant, came up with a brilliant idea. He decided to construct a huge wall around the garden. He used his magical powers to construct a wall around the beautiful garden to prevent every stranger inside the garden. From next day the garden heard no sound of playing children. The giggling and the laughter of children had vanished away. The Selfish Giant was happy! At last he could enjoy the bounteous garden all by himself. Summer was about to go and the harsh bells of Winter could be heard. The Selfish Giant waited for the brilliant snow fall to cover his garden. Time passed away but no winter came. The winter winds blew past the garden. For they could not enter the beautiful garden because of its wall. Like this Spring and next Summer too avoided the garden. Now the garden was as empty as a graveyard. No birds chirped on the branches, neither did flowers bloom. The Selfish Giant was upset but he did not realize his mistake.
The children in the mean time were in search of a secret path to the garden. They missed the garden a bit too much! Soon one of the boys found a tiny whole on the great wall of the garden. However, it was large enough to let the children leap into the garden. Soon all the children of the world gathered in there and began playing. Winds and birds followed them and soon the garden acquired its previous form. This time The Selfish Giant did not ask them to leave. He instead participated in their game and lived happily.
