Little Piccola is a short story written by Francis Jenkins. The story revolves around a little girl and Christmas festival. In the story the author pathetically narrates the plight of a sweet little girl named Piccola. Piccola lost her father at a very young age. Her mother was very poor and used to work hard to earn living. Little Piccola also used to help her mother she had no dolls and toys and was often exposed to cold and hunger but she never becomes sad or lonely. She never plays with other children and had no good clothes. In the story Little Piccola the author depicts a beautiful scene of nature with birds in the forest, and the flowers in the fields and meadows.

During the winters when the grounds remained all covered of snow Little Piccola use to help her mother and knit stockings with blue wool. In between her work she uses to feed the snow birds with crumbs. Now it was the Christmas day and there was hardly anything in the house. Her mother was ill and could not arrange money. All through the day Piccola worked hard and sold her beautiful stockings making feet bare in cold. She asks her mother what to hang as she already had sold the stockings and decides to put her wooden shoes on the hearth. Mother says to Little Piccola that this year she won’t get any gifts. But Little Piccola very confidently puts her shoes on the hearth on the Christmas Eve and went to sleep to dream of Saint Nicholas.
In the morning she finds a cold and hungry swallow which had flown into the chimney and down to the room, and had crept into the shoe for warmth. Little Piccola becomes very happy and clasps the little guest to her breast. She takes all care of the swallow and in the spring she opened the window for it to fly away, but it lived in the woods near by all summer, and use to come every morning to sing its sweetest songs at her door.
