The story begins with a poor girl selling matches on the streets on a New Year Eve night. She wore ragged clothes and looked hungry and tired. She felt frightened to go home fearing her father would beat her as she could not sell any matches that day. She warmed herself by lighting matches in the corner of a street. She visualized a iron stove when she lit the first match. But soon the fire extinguished due to the blowing winds. When she lit the second match a well decorated dinner table appeared before her. The table was filled a wide array of delectable dishes. Soon the second fire blew out and the table vanished. She again lighted the third match. A beautiful Christmas tree illuminated with brilliant candles came to her vision. The candle lights suddenly went upwards and reached the sky turning into stars. One of the stars appeared as a shooting star. Suddenly she remembered her grandmother's premonition that a shooting star symbolize a person's death or reaching heaven. By lighting the fourth match the girl views her grandmother smiling at her. She continue lighting matches to continuously view her grandmother. At last her grandmother hold her in her arms and they flew upwards in an unknown place where there was no hunger, cold or fear. People found the girl lie dying in the snow with a smiling face. The burnt matchsticks were scattered around her body. She went to her grandmother into a land of happiness.
