The Gift of the Magi is a short story written by O Henry. The English story is written by an American author in 1906. The famous story runs around two young married couple Jim and Della Dillingham Young. The young couple was very much in love with each other but have a poor economic condition. In the story The Gift of the Magi, the author narrates Jim and Della’s economic condition very pathetically. They use to live in a one room apartment opposite the elevated train which they barely afford. Even having a poor economic condition their love for each other is really complimentary. For the Christmas Della decides to buy a chain for his loving husband’s prized pocket watch given to him by his father.

Della decides to cut off her cascade like hairs by selling that to a make a wig and to raise funds. Meanwhile Jim also taking similar affection for his wife decides to gift Della with a beautiful set of combs for her beautiful golden hairs least anticipating the misery actually happened. Jim also had to sell his watch for buying the costly comb. In this way the story The Gift of the Magi describes the true love of a young couple with great feeling of sacrifice for each other.
At the end of the story The Gift of the Magi, it is found that although they both buy present for each other sacrificing their most precious possessions. The story actually intends to say that physical possession however valuable they may be become insignificant and small in front of true and unselfish love.
The Gift of the Magi ends with a clarification of the metaphor between Jim and Della and the Biblical Magi. In the present scenario the story is widely applied in popular culture. Television shows and motion pictures have been made referring the popular story.
