The Christmas Cuckoo is a Christmas legend penned by Frances Browne. In the story The Christmas Cuckoo the author describes the plight of two cobbler brothers. Once upon a time there stood a remote village in the North County. All the people living in the village were poor for their fields were barren and they could hardly trade. All the people living in the village were poor but the poorest of them all were the two brothers called Scrub and Spare who were cobblers by profession. Their hut was built of clay and wattles. The hut was without any window hence the door always remained open.

The roof was also thatched and could not keep out the rain. One day in the village a new cobbler arrived. He had lived in the capital and had served the king and the queen. He was an efficient cobbler and the entire village people would go to him.
Later in the story The Christmas Cuckoo The Christmas came and the two brothers had nothing to feast but only a barley loaf and a piece of rusty bacon. It was all cold, white and silent because of the snow. They had nothing to rejoice for. Spare asked his brother to cut the trees for firewood. But it was not possible as the roots were thick and could not be easily cut. In hope of getting the fire wood both the brothers tried hard to strain and strove with all their might the two brothers tried hard to get the firewood. They had to pass the Christmas only with a bread and bacon. In the later half of the story The Christmas Cuckoo meet with a bird cuckoo. They offer food to the little bird. Soon the bird becomes their friend. Many other things happen in the later half of the story. At the end of The Christmas Cuckoo we find how Spare started living in the King’s court happy and honored.
