Don't Look Now by Daphne du Maurier will arrest your attention to such a degree that you would not want to leave the book till you know who the real culprit is. As the very name suggests, The Bearded Lady by Ross Macdonald is a story of crime in disguise. A plot with a sudden twist the story is one of its kind in detective literature.
Every story in the collection of the Baker's Dozen is wonderful in its own little way. Sharp intellect and subtle sixth sense are what you need in order to enjoy the real essence of these detective stories. Death's Eye View by John D. MacDonald and Book taker by Bill Pronzini are equally good. But it takes courage to finish The Murder Machine by Hugh Pentecost at a single go. The Zero Clue by Rex Stout demands equal participation of the readers amidst absolute confusion. Storm by Ed McBain would attack you every moment with some interesting clues coming to the forefront. The King in Yellow by Raymond Chandler and Murder Set to Music by Fredric Brown are equally good. However, Death Rides a Boxcar by Erle Stanley Gardner and Nightmare by Cornell Woolrich deserve a special mention. When clubbed together into a whole these stories make a pleasant reading. Besides they are a great way to set your brain working.
